Carene Mary Theresa Plunkett Carlborn

AUSTIN, Tex — Carene Mary Theresa Plunkett Carlborn, formerly of Hancock, was born into a German-Irish religious family in Menominee, in 1940, the oldest of nine children.

She entered Holy Family Convent, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, in 1954. As Sister Bartholomew, she spent two years as a second grade teacher. Upon her departure from the convent she pursued a BA in speech and drama at UW Madison, graduating in 1965. Carene worked for the State Employment Agency in Racine and Milwaukee while achieving a graduate degree in Counseling in 1968 from UW Milwaukee. She then worked at the Milwaukee Public Schools as an elementary school counselor.

In 1973 Carene studied and taught Transcendental Meditation (TM) in Southern Spain and Arosa, Switzerland. While traveling and teaching TM in the Upper Peninsula she met her future husband, David Carlborn, and raised two daughters, Karana Shah and April Carlborn in Hancock.

For many years, Carene was active as a Girl Scout troop leader and as a volunteer for Little Brothers, Friends of the Elderly. In 1989 she took a position as an elementary school counselor in the Lake Linden-Hubbell Schools.

Since June of 1994 Carene had lived at Radha Madhav Dham in Austin, Texas, pursuing her spiritual goals. She has traveled to India on four separate occasions. Her life was shortened in a traffic fatality on August 24, 2017.

Carene is survived by her daughters, grandsons, Arya and Renny; sisters, Annette Plunkett, Gloria Hummel, Rita Wahl and Mary Dahl; brother, John Plunkett; numerous nieces, nephews and many close friends.

As per her wishes, Carene will be cremated and her ashes thrown into the Kalindi River. We are grateful to all who have related to her in her lifetime.
