Republic Council members converge on mobilisation for local elections

Luanda, ANGOLA, March 23 - The mobilisation of the citizens for their participation in the country's first local elections, scheduled to happen in 2020, is one of the priorities defined by the Council of the Republic members. ,

This stance was expressed through the press in the end of the Council of the Republic meeting held last Thursday and which analysed information related to the 2018 State’s General Budget (OGE) and the Strategy to Implement the Local Governments.

According to the Bayaka people king, António Charles Muanauta Cabamba, the members of the communities do not know the importance of the local elections, reason why there is a need to work on this issue.

“I represent the traditional authorities and my information will have to reach all of them, because the chieftains live amidst the communities”, he explained.

On his turn, the leader of the Social Renewal Party (PRS), Benedito Daniel, the 2020 date for the holding of the local elections was reached by consensus.

He also defended a broader debate in society with a view to finding the best model to implement the local elections, because PRS does not agree with the gradual inclusion of municipalities in this process (selection of some of them, and not all, for the first experience) as defended by other political forces, such as the ruling MPLA.

The entrepreneur Luís Nunes, another member of the Council of the Republic, also revealed that there was some consensus in the analysis of the points on the agenda.

He expressed his determination to get involved in the mobilisation of the society for a successful holding of the first municipal elections.

Reverend Luís Nguimbi, who represents the churches in the Council of the Republic, said to journalists that it is a hard task but the citizens will have to be mobilised for this event that will represent a turning point for the country.

To the prelate, the sensitisation work it is more important than the setting of the date for the election.

The journalist and writer Ismael Mateus, another Republic Council member, said that the country is going through an important moment, seizing the occasion to highlight the presence, in the meeting, of the former Head of State, José Eduardo dos Santos, a scenario that represents a peaceful transition of power and normal functioning of the country’s institutions.
